City of Saginaw MI -
How it Works
An event is held in the community at a specified location and $10 is charged per person at the door and is used to provide start-up money to the winning proposal and if necessary help pay for food and non-alcoholic refreshments for the event.
A panel of four volunteers from the community is convened to act as judges and will vote on the ideas that are presented. The fifth judge is the crowd in attendance and votes via a smart phone application. Five or six entrepreneurs with business ideas will give a five minute pitch to the group.
The winner of the event will receive $500 and have access to free or low-cost business service from local business experts. Saginaw Soup participants will also be able to take advantage of a business mentoring program through Saginaw Future, Inc.
Started in April, 2014 Saginaw Soup celebrates and supports innovative projects that benefit the Saginaw community. The Saginaw soup is modelled after an idea that found success in Detroit (Detroit SOUP). After dinner five or six local community projects will come and give a 5 minute to presentation of their ideas. Next, time will be set aside for thought and a period of discussion. Attendees will have a single, confidential vote on the project they would like to receive the funds. Benefits include helping great ideas in and for the city find funding and publicity and it is an opportunity to support creative people in Saginaw.
